On a Wing and a Prayer
This was one of those moments when you check the LCD screen of your DSLR and know you got a great shot (I shared it on Instagram by snapping the screen not long after), but also annoying that I didn’t have a 600mm f/4 to get it with and therefore have to not have to crop in very tight from the snap taken at 200mm…
I’m still waiting on that lottery win coming along which would solve all my gear desires… sigh…

Fantastic capture! What a great shot!
This is just fantastic – you are more lucky than I
– Splendid
Thanks +Jerry Kiesewetter +Mariane Cordes! Very much appreciated
Sell your work! The detail is still very good and it will be a greater chance than the lottery!
Despite the shortcomings you mentioned – as you yourself admitted – you knew the capture was great! Isnt this exactly what actually counts! kudos +Andy Gray
That is a very nice shot. That 200mm doesnt seem to be hurting you.
Wow it's a puffin love those xD
+Darryl Wolfendale I do make some stuff available, I'm in for the long haul for that lens (or similar) though!
+rajeev chari Exactly, it still looks great here on the web, just not so good printed up at a reasonable size.
+steve defeo I love my 70-200 and it does nothing but help me – though I think I'll hire a 400 or 600 for my trip out next year in breeding season.
+Anastasia Biddell They are amazing aren't they!
Great action shot Andy!
Thanks +Steve Gill! Its tricky to catch the little blighters, they're fast!!
Awesome shot! Is it a Puffin?
Thanks +Grace Nile It is indeed a Puffin!
Theres a few more in my album too!
Nise pic
Thanks +Gaurav Maid
wow! awsome….
A+++
Excellent catch +Andy Gray, I know how hard it is to snap these guys! If it's any consolation I had to crop quite a few of mine too even with a bigger lens. It was either that or I'd end up clipping their wings off
Thanks +Chris Miller, I think I'll hire a 400mm next year for a week and give that a go
You and me both. :-)
It's a great pic.
Amazing picture
beautiful pic
Simply superb !!
Beautiful photo! Where was this??
nice moment +Andy Gray – always good to at least get the shot…the best camera/lens you have is the one you have with you, right?
Thanks so much for adding this photo to #WildlifeWednesday.
Do penguins even fly?
They can for a little bit +Khairul Najmi Ainal but you have to throw them pretty hard.
LOL
Thanks for the nice comments everyone +Johannes Wei +bahri ramsidi +Lysette Price +lokesh sa +Sara Piazza +Morkel Erasmus
+Sarah Somerville It was taken on the Farne Islands off the coast of Northern England.
+Morkel Erasmus You are right! The one you have in your hand is the best
beautiful catch +Andy Gray ! i would suggest looking into bridge tele cameras. they're much cheaper than 600mm zoom lens (+/- USD350 – 500). i bought a nikon p510 with a whopping 1000mm zoom capability, and am quite impressed with it. you may want to compare it with canon sx40, panasonic fz150 (with RAW) or sony hx200v. i think they are greatly underestimated. on the downside, their lens are not interchangeable.
because at the end of the day, it's not about the gear but the images you are left with that's more important.
+leo kun Thanks for the tip! I'll have a look into that thanks
Hi Andy very lovely i agree a wing and a prayer and He lifts me higher and higher and sore like an eagle
Thanks +Luci Young :)
Nice pic but I don't see birds needing prayer.
+David Robertson They don't, but I do if I'm ever going to afford a £10k 600mm f/4 lens!
puffin …
Great shot
Andy,I've got my fingers crossed for your lottery win..I would pray too, but that would be dishonest as I mislaid my gods….
Puffins gotta puff.
That is a kick-ass puffin shot!
Fly my little penguin. Fly!
I love this picture! Great shot! I think getting a shot like this is like a hole-in-one in golf; needs a bit of luck on top of all the skills and equipment!
Awesome shot Andy <3
Wow. How did I miss this? The puffin looks so sad. He must have been sad I hadn't stopped by yet.
Lots of luck, and good sharpening in photoshop +Miranda Yen ;)
+Sam Breach You saw this one on the back of the camera via FB – finally got around to cleaning it up!
Awesome shot Andy!
Artistically inspiring pictures. Thank you for sharing them Andy.
