Tree in Wind Long Exposure

Tree in Wind Long Exposure

Tree in Wind Long Exposure

A few weeks ago I was asked to an event in the remote, hidden, private estate that is The College Valley in North Northumberland, close to the town of Wooler.

After the event, I had the chance to wander around the Valley taking a few shots of the spectacular views.

The weather was bright but blustery, the wind was pushing the clouds overhead quickly, meaning getting some effective Long exposures were possible. Here is one of the results…

It was shot using a B+W 10 stop filter, shot at f/16 and for 22 seconds. Even with a relatively short exposure the image was approaching having highlights blown out and being unrecoverable. Processed of course in Lightroom 4.1.

This was an image I rejected for use in the theme “Tree” for the July Scavenger hunt which I am taking part in.

It's beautiful.  If this was your "reject," I can't wait to see the photo you submitted.

  2. This is by no mean a reject in terms of photographs +Andy Gray it has a mood of solitude and calm even though its windy , love the range of tones as well

+Anita W +Richard Pennells Thanks! I only went with the shot I submitted on personal preference, I was torn between this and the one thats in. You never know this may have been more successful, but I preferred the other due to there being more elements in rather than the focus being the tree. Can't wait to see the Tree theme!

  4. All the lines in the photo are great. I recently purchased my 10 stop filter and have not got a chance to go out and use it. What a great motion shot.

  5. That's a reject for your tree? Dannng.

+Kenny Pereira Get out there and use it! You'll love it!

+Eustace James Just personal preference, I liked the overall scene of my submission where the tree isn't the main feature. If I could put 2 in this would go in ;)

Thanks +Katie Wright! Nice to catch up yesterday, its been a while.

Yes, indeed. This summer has been pretty crazy for me.

  9. better to get a reject than no tree at all ;-)  beautiful as always!

  10. Very cool! When I first saw your long exposures I thought how interesting it would be to capture wind on film. Think you'll experiment more?

+Shannon S. Myers Living in the countryside I'd have had NO excuse for not submitting a tree pic! ;)
+suzanne clements Yes, and I soooo want to get a 6 stop to use with the 10 stop so multi-minute daytime shooting becomes possible. This was almost blown out at 22 seconds…
